Sudbury, Ontario (population 165,000) is the largest city in Northern Ontario by population and land area. It was founded in 1893 by James Worthington who named the settlement after a town in England. It became a city in 1930. At first it was a major lumber centre, providing wood to reconstruct the city of Chicago after the Great Chicago Fire. However, ever since the first nickel deposits were discovered in 1883, Sudbury became the Nickel Capital of the world due to the many deposits of Nickel ore found in around the unique geological structure of igneous rock surrounding the city called the Sudbury Basin. In addition to being a mining centre, the city is also a centre for education, healthcare, manufacturing, and tourism thanks to being home to two of Ontario's most popular attractions, Dynamic Earth and Science North. The city is home to a large Francophone population and is a center for French culture. It is also the birthplace and hometown of the late Alex Trebek, host of Jeopardy!
