The city of St. Louis, Missouri (pop. 308,000) was founded in 1764 by Pierre LaClede and Auguste Chouteau as a fur trading post and the settlement was named after King Louis IX of France. The territory of Louisiana where St. Louis once stood was acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The city thrived as a port on the Mississippi River and became the fourth largest city in the United States. St. Louis is currently not a part of any county and is its own independent city in 1877 after its separation from St. Louis county. St. Louis’ economy is made of manufacturing, trade, transportation, service, and tourism. Companies headquartered here include Anheuser-Busch, Inc., Purina, Edward Jones, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Panera Bread and Energizer Batteries, just to name a few. Its central location within the U.S. make it somewhat of a hub for rail, air, ship and road transportation services. Post-Secondary educational institutions here include University of Missouri-St. Louis, Washington University in St. Louis (known for its renowned school of medicine), and Saint Louis University. The 630-foot tall Gateway Arch in the heart of Gateway Arch National Park is the tallest monument in the United States and is a prominent symbol on the St. Louis downtown skyline.
