Parry Sound (population 6,500) is located 160 km (100 miles) south of Sudbury, Ontario and is the hub of the 30,000 islands region of Georgian Bay. It is considered to be the gateway to Northern Ontario. The town was founded in 1857 when a sawmill was erected at the mouth of the Seguin River by James and William Gibson. Businessman William Beatty and his family purchased the mill in 1863 and 2,000 acres of land for which he laid out a town site. Soon after a store and church opened. Roads were soon built, as well as a dock for boats and railroad service to Bracebridge. The Beatty family enterprise stimulated the settlement’s growth and in 1887, it was officially incorporated as a town and was named after the famed Arctic explorer, Sir William Edward Parry. Parry Sound is also known for being the proud hometown of Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr.
